The zany characters that inhabit "Random, Kentucky" are at it again! The laughter never stops and neither does the comedic writing our own local playwright. This show opens September 23rd for THREE WEEKENDS...(tickets at www.westthill.com or 859-319-0205).

The 32nd Season of West T. I am sooo excited I can hardly stand myself....but enough about me!

Forget the fact that this show is history making for our theatre and community....it is fun, wonderfully acted and an incredible stage experience!

If you had told me 2 years ago that we could pull off an all African-American play with an all African-American cast....I would have told you ... you were wishfully thinking at best!

But it is gonna happen and you don't wanna miss it!

See you on stage, behind the stage or in the audience!

signed,

one grateful director....!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-4936356892733318152011-01-05T07:26:00.001-08:002011-01-05T07:29:26.628-08:00A Play with "Hat-titude"...Happy New Year all! Boy, we are really getting ready for a huge challenge here at the theatre - we are auditioning for "Crowns" this weekend. The cast is entirely African-American and we are excited about opening up this opportunity for our community. We only hope we can pull it off!

"Crowns" is a beautiful play with music and it has a great story. The play is told through the eyes of a young New York woman who goes south to visit her Aunt after some heartbreak. The ladies she comes in contact with share with her their heritage and history thru the wearing of hats. It is funny, touching, dramatic and uplifting.

I am privileged to direct it and hope that we have lots of interested folks at auditions on Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. Contact the theatre website for further info: www.westthill.com

here's hoping...

karendirector1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-4064267284622192002010-10-21T10:27:00.000-07:002010-10-21T10:32:51.010-07:00Things are busy...busy...Even after 31 years of opening/closing shows...I never cease to get excited from all the "excitement". Currently, we are rehearsing our Holiday Show at West's Wing and rehearsals for our upcoming "NIGHTMARE OFF BROADWAY" (10/29&30) are going on over at the Main Stage. I visited like a little mouse, checking up on everyone and seeing if there was any "cheese" about...It was so much fun to see all the comings and goings.

Music was being reviewed in the Wing...ghosts and goblins were getting costumed up at the theatre and basically there was lots of hub-bub and fun going on absolutely everywhere in every corner.

Creativity - LOUD and PROUD!

I love it!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-28150727516593401942010-10-05T11:38:00.001-07:002010-10-05T11:45:49.879-07:00Out of this World! Our WORLD PREMIERE of Liz Orndorff's "High Strangeness" was an enormous success! This is the first play in several years that sold out every performance! How exciting is that? Not only was it a well-written play, it was well directed, well staged-managed and acted out to perfection!

If you missed this play, not only did you miss a great opportunity to laugh and cry...you missed a unique opportunity to witness the reminiscings of the only living survivor of the 1976 alien abduction! Mona Stafford was a real hit and a pleasure all by herself. She shared with the audiences and answered questions during "UFO nite" following the performance. It was quite a treat.

This comedy-drama was a one of a kind and a privilege for our theatre to produce.

After scaring ourselves to death with "NIGHTMARE OFF BROADWAY" on October 30th and 31st., we will head into the Holiday Season with "North Pole Star" our Christmas offering. Director Beth Marlowe had more than 50 audition and will have a stellar cast.

Community Theatre is more than fun - add it to your activities - you won't be sorry!

- karendirector1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-89685103507197903972010-09-10T10:30:00.000-07:002010-09-10T10:38:31.166-07:00Another new season - 31 of 'em!!!Well, here we are, about to open our 31st Season - hard to believe!

31 years of knocking out fun, educational and exciting pieces - not to mention premiering some brand new plays!

Our 31st Season opens with an ELIZABETH ORNDORFF original! "Liz" has become quite the "toast of the town recently", premiering plays both with us and Pioneer Playhouse here in Danville. Several of her plays have also played outside of Kentucky and beyond! This effort is a serio-comedy based on some real life experiences of 3 gals who lived in Casey County, Kentucky in the 1970s. "HIGH STRANGENESS" is a wonderfully funny, yet poignant account of how these 3 women were alledgedly abducted by aliens and follows them as their lives are strapped in a ride of a lifetime! It opens on September 24th for two weekends - call our box office at 319-0205 or get tickets on line at www.westthill.com.

Check our website to round out our season schedule - there is bound to be something that will grab your interest.

On the tail of "High Strangeness" we will celebrate Halloween with some strange goings on during 'NIGHTMARE OFF BROADWAY".....thrills and chills for all October 29 and 30th.

Before you know it, Christmas will be upon us and all ages can audition for a reality show of sorts in NORTH POLE STAR....Auditions October 3 & 4 - Beth Marlowe directing!

Call if you have any questions - 859-236-8607

See you "on stage, behind the stage, or in the audience".

- Karendirector1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-52930461055419073772010-07-08T10:15:00.000-07:002010-07-08T10:21:19.663-07:00another opening show - this one in the Barnyard!Another show opens tomorrow - I seem to have lost count of all those I've been involved with over the years, but it always remains exciting. I must admit I am always nervous as well. Not sure why. The cast is well rehearsed, everything is in order. I guess it is just the nervous energy that comes with something that you have worked very hard at for a very long time and the entire project is about to be "revealed"!

It's a great show, "HONK, JR!". It has a little of everything: humor, drama, a good moral and most importantly, a great cast and crew. So, who ME worry? Nah...

Community Theatre is a wonderful venue. It affords the "average Joe" a chance to experience the magic of the stage and the intimate audience. The roar of the crowd (even if it is just 100 of your closest friends and family) is intoxicating!

Come on by: 117 Larrimore Lane, Danville, KY - West T. Hill Theatre. It is a "fowl" world, but we get by! "HONK, JR." is a blast with 24 cast members, mostly wonderful and talented kids. The music is so much fun and we are making progress for our OPENING on July 9th!

As I get older, I'm always afraid I won't relate to kids anymore, but each time I get a hug or a laugh, I am encouraged that I still have "some kid left in me" and all is well. These kids are sooo bright and soooo talented it makes the hard work worthwhile.

Get your tickets at 859-319-0205 and don't miss this fun and energetic show!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-16324356973708200812010-05-21T07:33:00.000-07:002010-05-21T07:36:50.610-07:00New Season - here we come!Well, our 31st season has been decided and it is amazing...actually we are so blessed, almost ALL of them have been amazing. We've made a few "iffy" choices, but basically we have balanced and formidable seasons. The economy has hit us more this year than any other. Folks aren't budgeting entertainment much, I suppose. Our ticket sales have been at an all time low. In my mind, "escape" to a nearby stage is therapy you must budget. But that is just me, and I'm pretty passionate about theatre arts!

You can check out our website soon and it will have all our dates and shows listed at www.westthill.com.director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-87480662830345204752010-04-29T10:08:00.000-07:002010-04-29T10:11:08.764-07:00Quack...quack...quack...HONK!We had nearly 70 auditioners recently for "Honk, Jr." ! We only had 10 roles for children, but they flocked in (get the pun?)! The auditions were difficult with so many in attendance, but we managed and even managed to have FUN, too.

"Honk" is a great piece and should be a lot of fun to produce. We wound up casting 25 and it will be crowed back stage, but we've done it before. With more than able help, we should have a great production.

Onward and upward my fine feathered friends!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-79649514723645502262010-04-15T11:21:00.000-07:002010-04-15T11:23:53.303-07:00Busy...busy...busyPLAY READING WEEK was the most successful ever! We averaged about 12 each evening and the "goodies" served were as always, scrumptious! The play were well received. Even the serious dramas were appreciated, but we aren't sure we will produce too many, as our survey this year overwhelming showed our patrons was COMEDY! "Life is too dire," many said. We will continue to try and balance our season in an artistic manner.

So...now the task of fixing a slate of plays for the Board to approve and setting the calendar for NEXT SEASON...it comes by so quickly!

Onward and upward!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-17203619910429007142010-03-23T11:34:00.000-07:002010-03-23T11:38:27.995-07:00"Play Reading Week" up soonWell, "Doubt" has closed...what a powerful show it was! Our ticket sales were low on this one. Folks don't seem to prefer much drama in their lives these days...can't say as I blame them. But this was a goodie! Pulitzer Prize winning, lots of layers, incredibly well-constructed dialogue, it was a pristine drama. 2 NEW actors took the stage with storming talent. It was a great experience for this director.

Now onto our next project: The vehicle that helps us plan our seasons - PLAY READING WEEK. We will all sit around a table and read the plays we are considering for next season. Diverse and fun.

Until next time - see you "on stage, behind the stage on behind the scenes"....!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-38905034943061175482010-03-09T08:51:00.000-08:002010-03-09T08:54:45.429-08:003 show rehearsing at same time!It isn't often that we have THREE SHOWS rehearsing at the same time...but we do right now! "Doubt" is about to open next week and that cast and crew is in the main theatre. "Sylvia" is having some transition, one of the cast members, a dear friend and player is having some health problems and had to drop out. But they WILL survive and so we pray real hard will our dear friend. "Sylvia" is rehearsing in the Wing until after next week. "The Miracle Worker" is rehearsing whenever/wherever they can hang their collective hats until "Sylvia" moves.

Confused? Me too. But what FUN we are having!

onward and upward!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-74072589071391731992010-03-05T05:01:00.000-08:002010-03-05T05:09:05.708-08:00"Doubt" coming soonI wasn't supposed to direct "Doubt"....Liz Orndorff, one of our directors and long time supporters was supposed to direct it. But Liz is a playwright, an author and all around busy gal trying to make her mark in the literary world so...she up and "won" a fellowship to write in Taos, New Mexico for 3 months. I can't imagine that she chose that opportunity over directing community theatre! At any rate, she is out there in the mountains trying to create and be famous and we are struggling back here in Danville to mount this incredible play by John Patrick Shanley!

It opens on March 17th for just 5 performances! To get tickets call our Box Office at 859-319-0205.

Our cast is incredible, featuring our founders' daughter, Paula Hill, Marc Roland, newcomers - Jo Newton and Dawn Baker. The talented Alice Berka is assisting me and we are well on our way in presenting this incredible drama.

The theatre is busier than ever with prep for PLAY READING WEEK. We've auditioned and cast two shows in the last month, "Sylvia" and "The Miracle Worker"...so THREE SHOWS are in rehearsal at the same time.

Personally, I feel a little spent, but exhilirated at the same time. I've been involved in this process for so long, I mostly take it in stride. But the process can be tedious and worrisome. There is so much "undercover" work that has to be done, i.e., costumes, set pieces, props, set dressing, painting, procuring unsual props, lighting, advertising, paperwork...it goes on...It is amazing how much work and energy goes into a community theatre production. The idea of Judy Garland's famous line - "let's put on a show" is ludicrous. It take a village, a community, and lots of effort.

In spite of everything, I am thrilled to be a part of it all!

See you "on stage, behind the stage, or in the audience"!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-59624531789954691572010-01-21T06:41:00.000-08:002010-01-21T06:44:35.458-08:00Play Reading Week coming soon...Our ANNUAL PLAY READING WEEK is upon us. This is a great tool to help choose our season. We started this in an effort to give folks who don't like to be on stage, don't want to audition, but DO like to read good plays in an informal setting. So, for a few days we meet, have scrumptious snacks and good coffee and read outloud all the plays that we might be considering for the next year. It is fun, alive and informative. This year, we will begin on Sunday afternoon, March 7th and each evening thru Wednesday. IF you have a play, let us know so we can get it ready to read!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-85581845023995248322010-01-15T11:44:00.000-08:002010-01-15T11:51:12.724-08:00It's been awhile...things got crazy at the theatre. My intent was good, but you know what they say about "good intentions". The film "Julia and Julie" really inspired me...but inspiration took a back seat to busy-ness. So...I must admit that my resolutions to write every day, went to every week, to once a month, to virtiually nothings since ... whatever...

The theatre had its wonderful 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. Food was great, the theatre facilities looked great, the company was great...everything was great! Now we are down to the business of the season and my job as Managing Director is never done.

We have an incredible schedule, which opened with the culmination of a 10-Minute Play Contest in September. We produced the top 8 plays. The judges received 75 plays to review and it wasn't easy to pick the top winners. But we did and had a wonderful run of producing them. There was a diverse cast - lots of new folks and it was successful all around. Then we produced "The Fantasticks" - the first (and only to our knowledge) musical that West Hill himself ever directed, some 25 years ago! This time the director's chair was occupied by his daughter, Paula Hill. It was a FANTASTICK! show and enjoyed by all.

Then we had a sweet, original play "CLAUS AND THE KING" that debuted to large, happy and pleased crowds. Another show that involved new people on stage and in the audience. Beth Marlowe always does a great job with the kids and this was NO exception!

We just recently finally cast "Doubt" to be produced in March. This intense play found us having difficulties casting the role for the African American mother. But we finally did and we have a dynamite cast!

Well....too much information for one catch up blog. Would love to get some more followers, but in the meantime, I'm glad to be back to writing....

Happy New Year!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-45532937051166878712009-09-25T09:39:00.000-07:002009-09-25T09:43:17.951-07:00After opening nite our our new theatre building, we continued to produce about 4-5 shows a season. We procured good directors and even better actors. Our patron paying base of regular givers kept rising. We sold out nearly every production. Our volunteer Board of Directors and volunteer players, director and technical folk worked often round the clock to keep the theatre a success. It was a good 10 years. It was time to grow again...and we began increasing our schedule. We added childrens shows and musicals. Again, we sold out. The involvement of children garnered nearly a 100 auditioners for one musical. The need was evident and we met it. Our childrens shows would sell out before they opened.

It was an exciting and prosperous time.director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-58050936199840363562009-09-03T07:25:00.000-07:002009-09-03T07:35:08.237-07:00debt here we come!Up until this point in our short history, we had no debt. We managed financially play to play, existing and maintaining just on ticket income and a handful of annual paying patrons. We had a couple of businesses that came on board and kicked in more than their share. But our coffers were small.

It was at this point, with not a "pot", we came across an old warehouse in the "Heart of Danville" and thought it might just be the perfect spot for our new home. We met, we discussed, we agonized over borrowing the money to get us started. One of the local banks believed in us, we had some friends that were builders and architects and our dream came into focus.

We had a major fund raising campaign and raised enough to make us feel it might be possible. And it was. We built, with the help of hundreds of local committed folk, a beautiful, State approved - 125 seat theatre! It was replete with restrooms, dressing rooms, a small green room, a workshop, a lobby area, a technical booth, and a very expensive sprinkler system!

While we were still waiting for paint to dry we opened "Inherit the Wind" in our new building! It was an exhilirating, satisfying and incredible night as George McClure and Dorothy Belle Hill ceremoniously cut the yellow ribbon across the stage on opening nite!

Ah...we were more than on our way!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-65088266411991038332009-08-28T11:26:00.000-07:002009-08-28T11:31:54.957-07:00going on with our leaderThe days following the loss of West T. Hill were difficult ones. But the one who suffered the most was the one who encouraged and pushed us on at every turn. Dorothy Belle was truly our beloved matriarch. She cajoled her friends to volunteer, to give money, to work, to do whatever was necessary to keep the theatre afloat. It more than floated.

No one said "no" to Dorothy Belle. You simply couldn't. She was ever bit the Southern Belle she seemed to be and her care was far reaching. For those of us who were trying to direct and lead, she was the ever present cheerleader. She worked tirelessly to establish regular paying patrons and to make them feel needed.

The plays got produced and received raving reviews at every turn. The play selection was diverse and educational and well as entertaining. By this time, and fortunately, before his death, we renamed the theatre after our founder. West T. Hill Community Theatre was well on its way of establishing an excellent reputation State wide and beyond.

Suddenly property became available and it was time to kick ourselves into high gear!director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-55933409381213842832009-08-27T10:19:00.000-07:002009-08-27T10:24:41.809-07:00Dr. Hill gets illJust when things were really kicking into gear, West T. Hill finds out that he has a disabilitating disease of the bones. For the next several years, with Dorothy Belle by his side, he continues to direct our plays with diligence. There were times his pain was so bad sitting in his wheelchair, he would ask one of the fellas to lift him out and simply put him on the floor. From the floor he would continue to direct, never missing a beat in guiding his actors.

It was hard for those of us who held them dear to see them both suffer so. Dorothy Belle suffered along with her beloved and we all went along for the ride.

The theatre flourished and grew.

Plans were made to buy our own building.

At some point, Dorothy Belle couldn't manage anymore and we saw less and less of West. He took several of us under his wing and passed on his directing acumen. I was one of those lucky ones.

Before we knew it he was gone. Dorothy Belle picked herself up and continued on with the theatre. She did EVERYTHING but direct.director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-55114422573923340012009-08-26T05:56:00.000-07:002009-08-26T06:01:03.210-07:00growing painsFor the first ten years of our organization (or so)...we were called the "Danville-Boyle County Community Theatre". We had a great core group and wonderful followers, who became patrons for a minimal fee of $10.00 annually. That barely kept us afloat and we kept our expenses at a minimum.

At some point, Centre College offered us a couple of basement rooms in one of their older buildings. We got together one Saturday morning and painted EVERYTHING...black. The BLACK BOX was born. It was wonderful to have "our own space". There were drawbacks, of course. They played basketball above our heads in an old gym and the nearest restrooms were down the hall and we had to share them. There was no air conditioning. AND...there were poles in the sight lines of our stage. These were structural building poles, nothing that we could "remove". We just tried very hard not to seat folks in front of one, but there were about 8 and that was not easy. We had full houses for almost every show, so invariably somebody had to crane their neck, but there were no major complaints.director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-49900944292898704062009-08-25T06:51:00.000-07:002009-08-25T06:55:39.286-07:00in the beginning...It was around this time of the year in 1979 that West T. and his loving wife, Dorothy Belle held a meeting in the Danville City Hall to see how many folks might be interested in forming a community theatre.

Shortly after that meeting they held auditions for the first production. Many showed up. I showed up. I auditioned. I wasn't cast. I couldn't imagine that. But, I persevered and it wasn't long before West T. Hill decided I merited a second look and he cast me in a play and it was a "doozy"...a little story about George Bernard Shaw, entitled "Dear Liar".

The interest in a community theatre was great. A handful of actor wannabes came together about 2-3 times a year for the first few years and produced plays wherever they could "hang their hat". The quality of the performances was excellent and we were off and running...director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9010862845397671122.post-58308655992598007942009-08-24T10:52:00.000-07:002009-08-24T10:56:26.175-07:00Was it just 30 years agoOn the eve of celebrating the 30 anniversary of the creation of West T. Hill Community Theatre, in Danville, Kentucky, I thought it was appropriate that some things be put to writing for "posterity". It seems that "posterity" is a wealthy creature, having volumes of things to share on thousands of topics. But, for the purpose of this particular journal, I will attempt to go back to our beginnings of a community theatre and hope that in my journaling, others will learn and enjoy the growing pains of a small community theatre. As the theatre's current managing director, as well as an actor and technical person, I think I have a lot of memories and thoughts to share. I look forward to any comments and the sharing of like experiences from any readers we may garner.director1http://www.blogger.com/profile/03625117567898782092noreply@blogger.com0
